Trains to Liverpool Whether you're travelling for work, leisure or a bit of both, Merseyrail's trains to Liverpool offer the best in comfort and convenience. Kirkdale station is within walking distance of Goodison Park. Main article: Wirral Line The Wirral Line is shown in green on the Merseyrail map and denoted by the above wordmark on underground stations. Each line from the terminus stations runs to Hamilton Square underground station in Birkenhead and through the Mersey Railway Tunnel, continuing around the single track underground loop tunnel in Liverpool's city centre.
Trains head back into the Mersey Railway Tunnel to return to one of the Wirral's terminus stations.
These combine to give a service at least every five minutes from Birkenhead Hamilton Square and around the loop under Liverpool's city centre. At Ellesmere Port there is a minimal service to and from Warrington. It is denoted by the above wordmark on maps.
The City Line is not operated by Merseyrail trains; however, the trains stop at two stations operated by Merseyrail. Services are less frequent than those on the Northern Line and Wirral Line, generally half-hourly on weekdays.
This railway was originally steam powered, but the underwater tunnel became filled with smoke leading to a most unpleasant ride. Throughout the s the Mersey Railway was extended both in Birkenhead and in Liverpool, where the tunnel was extended from James Street to Central Station, Liverpool. In the line was electrified using a third rail in order to make the trip beneath the Mersey more tolerable for riders.
In the 60s plans were drawn up to create Merseyrail, using the existing and new electrified routes, a new cross-town tunnel and a reconstructed Mersey Railway tunnel under central Liverpool.
Between and the old Mersey Railway's tunnel was converted into a new single track circle line with trains operating in a clockwise direction.
This arrangement was made possible because Merseyrail is a completely segregated rail network. The total length of the system is km of standard gauge railway electrified with V third rail and contains 67 stations.
